Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program in Mentor, Ohio
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most popular and active programs at GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness, with more class opportunities on our official schedule than any other martial arts program we offer. That availability reflects both the popularity and diversity of Jiu-Jitsu within our academy.
Our students come to Jiu-Jitsu with many different goals. Some want realistic self-defense and improved fitness. We have many law-enforcement officers who train to develop practical grappling skills for their profession. Amateur and professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters use Jiu-Jitsu to strengthen their ground game inside the cage, while other members train specifically for sport grappling competition. Many simply enjoy the challenge, technical depth, community, and lifelong learning that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides.
A Complete Gi & No-Gi Program
GriffonRawl teaches both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so students learn how grappling changes depending on clothing, grips, rules, and circumstances.
The Gi is the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform. Its jacket, sleeves, pants, and lapels create additional gripping opportunities that can be used for takedowns, control, escapes, and submissions. No-Gi training removes those traditional grips and places greater emphasis on body positioning, movement, wrestling-style control, and grips directly on the opponent.
Learning both approaches helps students develop a broader and more adaptable grappling game. Our coaches also cover different strategies and rule concepts so members can better understand how techniques may change for self-defense, sport grappling, law-enforcement application, or Mixed Martial Arts.
Realistic Self-Defense, Fitness & Technical Growth
Self-defense and fitness are two of our highest priorities. Jiu-Jitsu teaches students how to manage distance, control positions, escape bad situations, use leverage, execute takedowns, and apply submissions while learning to stay calm under pressure.
Training also provides a demanding full-body workout. Grappling develops cardiovascular endurance, functional strength, coordination, balance, mobility, grip strength, body awareness, and mental toughness. Because Jiu-Jitsu is highly technical, students are constantly solving problems while they train, making it as much a mental challenge as a physical one.
One Team - Many Goals
Our Jiu-Jitsu room includes beginners, recreational students, law-enforcement officers, competitors, and amateur and professional fighters, but everyone is part of the same team. GriffonRawl is one big community where members are expected to help one another learn, improve, and become stronger versions of themselves.
We take pride in keeping the program highly technical and diverse. Everybody's goals matter. A student training for self-defense does not need the same approach as an MMA fighter preparing for a cage fight or a grappler preparing for a tournament, and our coaching reflects those differences.
Live Rolling, Communication & Progression
Most Jiu-Jitsu classes include an opportunity for live rolling near the end of training. Rolling allows students to apply techniques against a resisting partner and develop timing, control, decision-making, escapes, offense, defense, and composure.
Live rolling is optional for members who simply want to participate in the technical portion of class. However, students who want to progress through the Jiu-Jitsu ranking system are expected to develop the ability to safely roll, communicate with training partners, and demonstrate their skills through controlled live application.
Communication and being a responsible training partner are extremely important. The goal is not to hurt or overpower teammates. The goal is for both people to learn, test their skills, and continue improving together.
Competition, MMA & Law-Enforcement Applications
GriffonRawl regularly supports students who choose to compete in local sport grappling tournaments, and our team works to understand and prepare for different competition rules and strategies. We want our competitors to be successful whenever they represent the academy.
At the same time, sport competition is only one part of our program. Our MMA athletes learn how Jiu-Jitsu changes when strikes are involved, and our law-enforcement members can develop grappling skills that emphasize control, positioning, awareness, and practical application.
Students interested in those applications are encouraged to keep an open mind and take advantage of the diverse experience available throughout the academy.
Experienced Black-Belt Leadership & Lineage
GriffonRawl's Jiu-Jitsu program benefits from multiple black belts and decades of martial arts experience within the academy. Jason Dent and Donny Walker are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts under Master Jorge Pereira, an 8th Degree Coral Belt with lineage connected to legendary Rickson Gracie.
That depth of experience helps GriffonRawl maintain a technical program while continuing to expose students to different approaches, body types, strategies, and applications of Jiu-Jitsu.
Three Martial-Arts Rooms & Extensive Mat Space
GriffonRawl has three dedicated martial-arts/dojo rooms with extensive mat space. Having multiple training areas gives our coaches flexibility to divide groups when appropriate, provide additional drilling space, accommodate different experience levels, and support both technical instruction and live training.
The facility allows our Jiu-Jitsu community to continue growing without losing the ability to give students room to train properly.
Recommended Training Gear
Students who are serious about developing their Jiu-Jitsu skills and progressing through the ranking system should eventually have a proper Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi. A mouthpiece is recommended, while groin protection is optional.
We also highly encourage students to have a pair of padded grappling or 'turtle-style' MMA gloves. These allow students to grapple while safely incorporating controlled light striking during specific drills designed to connect Jiu-Jitsu with realistic self-defense or MMA concepts.
New students should not let the cost of a Gi prevent them from getting started. For the first month or two, an old hoodie without zippers can serve as a temporary option for appropriate Gi-style drilling. The material gives training partners something to safely grip for takedowns, positional work, and submission techniques without interfering with proper practice.
As students become established, we recommend purchasing proper training equipment. Our on-site GriffonRawl Pro Shop stocks Gis, training apparel, protective equipment, and other gear used throughout our martial arts programs.
