Wrestling Program in Mentor, Ohio

GriffonRawl Wrestling is a highly versatile program designed to help athletes and everyday members develop strong, reliable takedown skills, control, conditioning, and confidence. The program is led by two coaches with collegiate-level wrestling experience who enjoy helping students at every level and adjusting instruction to the people and goals in the room.

That means a class can benefit an active scholastic or collegiate wrestler looking to sharpen competition skills just as much as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student, grappling competitor, MMA fighter, or beginner who simply wants to learn something challenging and useful.

Takedowns for Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Grappling & MMA

Wrestling is one of the most valuable crossover skills in combat sports. Our coaches work with students on takedown offense and defense, positioning, setups, entries, finishes, balance, pressure, control, scrambling, and the ability to determine where an exchange takes place.

For Jiu-Jitsu and sport-grappling students, Wrestling can provide the confidence and technical ability needed to initiate takedowns instead of relying only on ground positions. For our MMA athletes, those same fundamentals become essential for both getting an opponent to the ground and defending against someone trying to take them there.

Both of our Wrestling coaches also actively train and hold rank in GriffonRawl's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. That crossover experience helps them understand how traditional Wrestling concepts can be adapted for Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling, and Mixed Martial Arts rather than teaching every student as though they are preparing for the exact same ruleset.

For Active Wrestlers & Competitors

Students who are actively competing in school-based Wrestling—including high-school and collegiate athletes—can use GriffonRawl as an additional place to develop their skills, ask questions, work through specific situations, and receive experienced coaching.

Our coaches can adjust the focus based on the athletes in attendance and the questions they bring to class. The goal is to help each wrestler identify areas for improvement while continuing to strengthen the fundamentals that make Wrestling effective.

Realistic Self-Defense, Fitness & Confidence

You do not need to be a competitive wrestler or fighter to benefit from this program. Learning how to control balance, defend a takedown, achieve a takedown, maintain position, and stay composed during physical resistance can also provide valuable realistic self-defense skills.

Wrestling is an outstanding workout. The constant movement, drilling, level changes, pressure, scrambling, and body control can develop cardiovascular endurance, functional strength, coordination, balance, explosiveness, mental toughness, and overall fitness.

For someone simply looking to learn a new skill while getting into better shape, Wrestling provides a challenging environment where progress builds confidence.

One Team - Every Program Works Together

At GriffonRawl, we do not view our programs as isolated from one another. Wrestling strengthens Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu strengthens MMA. Striking programs strengthen MMA. Each discipline gives our members another opportunity to develop specific tools and then bring those skills back into the rest of their training.

Our Wrestling coaches work with scholastic wrestlers, grapplers, Jiu-Jitsu students, MMA fighters, and recreational members as part of the same team. Everybody's goals matter, and our culture is built around helping one another become more successful at whatever challenge they are working toward.

Live Drilling & Technical Development

Wrestling requires students to learn how techniques work against active resistance, so live and situational drilling can be an important part of training. Coaches control the structure and intensity of the work while helping students understand positioning, timing, pressure, and safe training habits.

Students are expected to communicate with their partners, use appropriate control, and help one another improve. The purpose of live training is technical development—not turning every round into a competition.

Recommended Training Gear & Mat Rules

Regular athletic shorts and a T-shirt are appropriate for Wrestling class. Wrestling shoes or Boxing shoes are optional, although the majority of GriffonRawl members train barefoot because many of the other combat-sports and grappling competitions our students participate in do not use shoes.

Street shoes are never permitted on GriffonRawl's martial-arts mats.

A properly fitted mouthpiece is recommended whenever students participate in live drilling or training. We encourage members across our combat-sports programs to keep a mouthpiece available because it is a simple piece of protective equipment that can be useful whenever live work is introduced. Groin protection is optional.

New members do not need to purchase everything before beginning. GriffonRawl maintains a limited amount of loaner training equipment to help students get started. Our on-site GriffonRawl Pro Shop stocks training apparel, mouthpieces, protective equipment, and other gear members may need as they progress.
