Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Program in Mentor, Ohio

Mixed Martial Arts is where the different areas of combat sports come together. At GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness, our MMA program teaches students how to blend striking, clinch work, takedowns, wrestling, ground control, submissions, ground-and-pound, and transitions into one complete game.

Rather than treating striking and grappling as separate skills, MMA teaches students how to connect them. Our coaches also work to cover the important “gray areas” between individual disciplines, including ground-and-pound offense and defense, striking-to-takedown transitions, takedown offense and defense, wall and cage-control concepts, and the transitions between standing and ground fighting.

Putting the Complete Game Together

GriffonRawl offers specialized programs in Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and other areas of combat sports. MMA is the class where students learn to bring those skills together.

Students can absolutely improve by consistently attending MMA alone. However, anyone who wants to get the greatest benefit from the program is strongly encouraged to keep an open mind and cross-train in our other classes. Additional time developing striking in Muay Thai or Boxing and grappling in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Wrestling gives students more tools to bring back into MMA and can accelerate their overall development.

Think of the individual disciplines as opportunities to sharpen specific tools. MMA teaches you how and when to use those tools together.

Fitness for the Body & Mind

MMA training challenges the entire body. The combination of striking, wrestling, grappling, takedowns, movement, drilling, and live work can build cardiovascular endurance, strength, coordination, balance, speed, toughness, and overall conditioning while burning calories.

It also develops the mental side of combat sports. Students learn to problem-solve under pressure, remain composed when tired, adapt when a technique does not go as planned, and continue working through difficult positions. The result is training that develops both physical ability and mental resilience.

One Team - Serious Training in a Supportive Environment

Although MMA is one of our more competition-oriented programs, the GriffonRawl culture remains the same: everybody trains as part of one community, our coaches take safety seriously, and questions are always encouraged.

Our experienced coaches supervise training, help pair students appropriately, explain the purpose and intensity of drills, and work to create an environment where people can challenge themselves while continuing to learn and progress. Communication between training partners is strongly emphasized. Being a responsible teammate means helping the person across from you improve while protecting one another’s safety.

Live Training, Technical Sparring & Competition

Live drilling and sparring are an important part of learning how MMA works against an actively resisting partner. During regular MMA classes, sparring is generally controlled, lighter, and technical. The goal is to learn how to apply skills with timing and resistance - not to turn every practice into a fight.

Communication between training partners is a major part of our approach. Coaches manage the training environment and students are expected to communicate, use control, and respect the purpose of each round.

Harder competition-style sparring is handled separately from normal technical class sparring. These sessions are generally organized for active competitors and serious, experienced members who specifically want harder rounds and can utilize our full-size competition cage under experienced supervision.

Our MMA program is especially well suited for students interested in competition or those who want to understand MMA as a complete fighting system. Because live work is a regular part of this program, students should be comfortable with progressing toward controlled technical sparring.

A Proven Competitive History

For students with competitive goals, GriffonRawl has a long and proven history in Mixed Martial Arts. Over the years, our academy has produced multiple UFC veterans as well as numerous amateur and professional MMA champions.

That competitive experience influences how we teach, but it does not change who we teach. The same technical knowledge, experienced coaching, and attention to detail that have helped prepare successful competitors are used to help every MMA student improve.

Recommended Training Gear

Because MMA combines multiple areas of combat sports and the training can change depending on the lesson, students should be prepared with several pieces of equipment. MMA gloves and a mouthpiece are strongly recommended. Boxing gloves and shin guards are also recommended so students are prepared for striking-oriented drills and technical sparring. Groin protection is recommended for live training.

New members do not need to purchase every piece of equipment before starting. GriffonRawl has a limited amount of loaner gloves and protective equipment available during a student’s first month or two while they get established and determine what they need.

For conditioning, we have plenty of jump ropes available for community use, so bringing your own is not necessary. Our on-site GriffonRawl Pro Shop stocks the training equipment and apparel used throughout our martial arts programs, including jump ropes for students who prefer to have their own.

Is GriffonRawl MMA Right for You?

Our MMA program is best suited for students who want to challenge themselves through a more complete form of combat-sports training. While the program has a strong competitive foundation, you do not need previous fight experience to begin. You need an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a desire to improve.

Our coaches will help you understand the training, answer questions, and progress at an appropriate pace. From there, how far you take your MMA journey is ultimately up to you.

Train with purpose. Help your teammates improve. Keep learning. Keep moving forward.
