Muay Thai Program in Mentor, Ohio
Muay Thai is one of the world's most effective striking arts, using punches, kicks, knees, elbows, footwork, defense, and clinch fighting to develop a complete stand-up skill set. At GriffonRawl Combat Sports & Fitness, we teach Muay Thai as more than a competitive fighting style. Our program is designed to provide realistic self-defense skills, outstanding physical conditioning, mental toughness, confidence, and - when desired - a path toward competition.
You do not have to be a fighter, and you do not have to be in great shape before you begin. Beginners train alongside experienced students in a team environment where everybody's goals matter. Whether you want to lose weight, burn calories, tone up, become stronger, improve your conditioning, learn how to defend yourself, or eventually compete, our coaches and team will help you move forward from where you are today.
Learn Complete, Realistic Striking
Our Muay Thai curriculum teaches students how to use the entire body effectively. Training includes proper punching combinations, kicks, knees, elbows, defensive movement, footwork, distance management, and clinch work. Students learn not only how to strike, but how to move, defend, control distance, stay composed under pressure, and apply their skills realistically.
Because GriffonRawl is a complete combat sports academy, our approach is grounded in techniques that have practical value. The same fundamentals that build successful athletes can also give everyday students greater confidence and useful self-defense ability.
Fitness for the Body & Mind
Muay Thai provides a challenging full-body workout while developing a skill you can continue improving for years. Classes can include warm-ups, calisthenics and conditioning, shadowboxing, technical instruction, pad work, heavy-bag work, partner drilling, and other training designed to improve endurance, coordination, speed, strength, balance, and overall fitness.
The physical benefits are only part of the experience. Consistent training also develops discipline, focus, perseverance, confidence, and the ability to remain calm while working through challenges. We believe getting fit means becoming stronger both mentally and physically.
One Team - Every Goal Matters
One of the strengths of GriffonRawl is our culture. New students, recreational members, experienced martial artists, and competitors all train as part of the same community. Our highly experienced coaches provide instruction, but our students also support and encourage one another. We believe everybody has something to learn and everybody has something to contribute.
Not everyone wants the same thing from training - and we do not expect them to. Our large facility gives us the space to divide training when appropriate and provide different options based on experience, comfort level, and individual goals.
Sparring & Advanced Training
Sparring is completely optional at GriffonRawl. Students who want to focus on technique, fitness, pad work, bag work, and partner drills can continue doing so without being required to participate in live sparring.
Because GriffonRawl has a large facility with multiple dedicated training areas, we are able to divide students when appropriate. Members who want live sparring can work under the supervision of our coaches while other students continue technical training and conditioning in a separate area.
This allows beginners, recreational members, fitness-focused students, and competitors to train together as one team while still having options based on their individual goals and comfort level.
For students interested in competition or more advanced training, our experienced coaching staff can progressively introduce the appropriate level of live work as they develop.
Recommended Training Gear
As students continue training, we recommend having your own hand wraps, boxing gloves, shin guards, and mouthpiece. A mouthpiece is recommended for training even if you do not plan to participate in sparring. Groin protection is optional for regular training and highly recommended for students who choose to spar.
New members do not need to purchase everything before starting. GriffonRawl has a limited amount of loaner gloves and protective equipment available during a student's first month or two while they get established.
For conditioning, we have plenty of jump ropes available for community use, so bringing your own is not necessary. Students who prefer their own jump rope can purchase one in our on-site Pro Shop, which stocks the training equipment and apparel needed for the program.
Muay Thai shorts are available in the Pro Shop but are not required. Regular athletic shorts are perfectly acceptable for class.
Who is This Program for?
Our Muay Thai program is for adults with a wide range of goals and experience levels - from someone taking their first martial arts class to an experienced athlete preparing for competition. You do not need to 'get in shape first.' Training is how you begin getting in shape.
Come in willing to learn, work, and improve. We'll help you build from there.
